Definition Clarity

There seems to be some confusion with wellness and health insurance.  To clarify, just because you have health insurance does not mean you are healthy or well.  Quite the contrary as there is a big difference between these two.

Insurance is defined as:

“The act, system, or business of insuring property, life, one’s person, etc., against loss or harm arising in specified contingencies, as fire, accident, death, disablement, or the like, in consideration of a payment proportionate to the risk involved.” – World English Dictionary

 Wellness is defined as:

The quality or state of being of healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.” – Merriam-Webster’s Medical Dictionary

So one is how you pay for your health and the other is the actual steps you use to keep you healthy.

If you practice good healthy habits of wellness on a daily basis, then you more than likely won’t be needing the health insurance.  On the contrary, if you rely on your health insurance to keep you healthy, then you won’t feel as good and you will be spending more of your hard earned dollars visiting the doctor rather than for your own enjoyment.

Think of your health insurance as the safety net if you are in accident or have an emergency. It is not meant to be the replacement for your personal responsibility of your own health habits!  Don’t wait for your health insurance company to tell you when to be healthy.  It requires a daily vigilance to be well.
