Finding the Child Within

In first grade, what was your favorite subject?  For most it was recess.  This was the time when teachers breathed a sigh of relief as all the students were let outdoors to run amok.  When the doors flew open, everyone ran around with wild abandon while screaming on occasion at the top of their lungs that they were free.  It was a race against other classes to be the first to get to the swings or the kickball field or the handball courts.  Kids honed their balance skills on the truck tires or practiced doing what their parents told them not do by hanging upside down on the monkey bars.  With what seemed like an endless supply of energy, kids would keep moving in the rain or even after the bell rung to bring them back inside.

Child Spirit

Somewhere along the lines, adults lose that sense of playfulness and desire to be free.  What with bosses yelling at you in one ear and customers screaming in the other, the pressures from daily life can easily snuff out the playful side.  It’s time to let that child out for some play time.  Recapture that spirit you possessed as a little child.  There is no right or wrong way to play, just get moving and feel the weight lifted from your body and watch as a smile emerges.  Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Go rock hopping
  • Swing from bar to bar (not the over 21 bar)
  • Roll down a hill
  • Splash in some rain puddles
  • Swing as high as you can
  • Skip rocks at the beach
  • Sprint as fast as you can for 20 seconds down a sidewalk then repeat until you need a break

The most important aspect for this free exercise is to just move and find that child within.  You will be surprised at how good it feels!
