The Need to Move

When I say exercise,  what is the first thought that comes to mind.  For most people, they think of going to the gym and that image intimidates many.  Because there is a negative association with bodily movement, we tend to prioritize this need lower on our list of things to do on a daily basis.

On top of the fear, we have developed so many ways to avoid using our bodies.  In other words, we take the easy way out and for that our health has begun to suffer. For example:

  • Doors that open with the Push of a button (good for those with wheel chairs, but no so for those without)
  • Elevators or escalators to go up just 1 – 2 floors
  • Parking as close to shop as possible (willing to circle for hours rather than park 4 blocks away)

In our push to simplify our lives, we have forgotten all about what are bodies need and that is to move.  As young children we enjoying moving, but as we get older this desire gets lost.  Our bodies are meant to move and when they do, they repay us with bigger dividends.  So when you are standing around waiting for the elevator next time, think of me on your shoulder and go hit the stairs for a few extra bits of movement for the day, while you give the elevator a break.
