Where’s Waldo – The Search for Nutrients

We face an uphill battle when it comes to finding food with real nutrients available in convenient locations.  Many kids today are brought up believing that anything on the store shelves is good for you and will provide all the daily nutrition that we need.

In Search of Nutrients

Just take a look at this photo from a school student store. At this local higher institution, a place where students need to have sharp minds, they have little to select from other than sugar, fat, and salt.  Sure a lot of pretty colors to entice one to eat; however there is nothing of nutritional value on this wall that will help students with their learning nor help with their waist lines.   Rather, we have put them into a vicious sugar cycle that only helps them in the short run to stave off their hunger, but adds no nutritional value so they will be back looking for more nutrients in just a short while.  In essence, we have set them up to fail from a nutrition stand point and when it comes to helping their education.

We are more likely to find a bag of potato chips or tortilla chips and soda than you are to find fruits and vegetables when out and about.   While it is best to prepare all of the foods you need to eat during the day at home, we need to relearn what foods we can eat when on the go that will help both our mind and bodies, otherwise our health problems will only get worse over time.  I look forward to the day that I hear young kids asking for pomegranate juice rather than a diet soda when out at a restaurant or veggie burger, but hold the fries and substitute it with a spinach and broccoli salad.  Remember, when we give our bodies the nutrients it needs, the body pays us back in many ways so we can stay happy and healthy.
