Misadventures in Health Habits #1

I’ve been lucky enough to attend a conference in Las Vegas.  You would think an organization related to health could pick a better location, but it sure let’s everyone kick up their heels for a few days.  Now I know I should turn off my personal responsibility insights when in Sin City, but I thought I might share some poor health habit examples and what the general population is up against when at home and away.  For instance:

  • Buffet of Buffets – $44.95  for all you can eat all day. (Caloric nightmare.)
  • $20 to use a closet size fitness center which is only open till 6 p.m.  (I didn’t think Vegas closed anything – except those related to health.)
  • No organic fruit stands or any readily accessible fruit.  (I must be from the NW.)
  • Overheard, while in line: “I only eat once per day.” (I’m sorry to hear that – it will catch up with you at some point.  A good reminder that you need to be eating breakfast then every 3 – 4 hours for a healthy metabolism.)

A couple of visuals to go along with the insights.

This is what powers Vegas, not Hoover Dam.

Removing barriers for traffic flow.

Vegas does have one positive that I can relate with corporate wellness.  On the Vegas Strip, to help with flow of traffic, they have installed walking bridges at the corners to handle the throngs of people that would otherwise take too long to cross the street, while backing up traffic and posing a safety hazard.  In the same vein, it is important to remove the barriers at work to allow for wellness to flow.  The guard rails help to guide pedestrians safely to their destination.

More insights to come as the sun sets and Vegas comes alive with more examples of poor health choices.
